                                 CULTURAL COOPERATION

The following agreements between Italy and India are in effect:

1) Agreement on Cultural Cooperation. Signed on July, 12th 2004 at New Delhi, it entered into force on October 6th, 2008. The Agreement details the outlines for the cultural cooperation activities.

2) Operational protocol for Cultural Cooperation. Signed in February 2007, it is valid till 2009 and it contains details of cultural cooperation projects and of the annual allocation of funds for carrying out such projects.         

3) Agreement on co-production of films. It was signed on May 13th, 2005. It entered into force on June 12th, 2008.  This agreement specifies the regulatory guidelines for cooperation between the two industries and shall open the way for specific agreements in cinematographic sector.       


EXCHANGE OF VISITS

Hon. Mr. Giuliano Urbani, Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities, visited India twice. The objective of the first visit in January 2003 was to start discussions for an Agreement on co-production of films and on Cooperation between Televisions (RAI and Doordarshan). The second visit in February 2005, during the State visit, resulted in signing of a MoU on restoration of frescos in the Ajanta and Ellora caves and laid the foundation for further cooperation in cinematographic and television sectors.  T

he Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities, Hon. Francesco Rutelli, visited India in 2007. He hold a lecture on the cultural cooperation between Italy and India at the Italian Cultural Centre in New Delhi. On the same occasion, he opened the exhibition “Underwater Archaeology”.

The Operational Protocol for Cultural Cooperation was signed during the visit to India by the Prime Minister, Hon. Romano Prodi (February 2007). Mr. Prodi hold a lecture at Madras University, where he also inaugurated the “UnoM – Pirandello Resource Centre for Italian Studies”. President Prodi was awarded with the honoris causa by Calcutta University. He opened the exhibition “On The Edge of Vision” at the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and the exhibition on Ajanta restoration at the National Museum in Delhi. T

he Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Mssimo D’Alema, visited Delhi and Mumbai from 10 to 12 October 2007. On the occasion, he hold a lecture at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) entitled “Italy, Europe and India: making the multilateral system stronger”. Mr. D’Alema also inaugurated the exhibition “100 Objects of Italian Design” by La Triennale di Milano, together with the Indian Minister of Culture, Ambika Soni, at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi.


CULTURAL EVENTS

The Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Centre in New Delhi, in collaboration with the Consulates of Kolkata and Mumbai, promote, organize and finance a wide range of cultural events to strengthen and expand cultural ties between India and Italy. Some of the important events amongst many organized in 2008 are: 

- Design exhibition ''100 objects of Italian Design'' 
Piano concert by Ludovico Einaudi
 - Contemporary art exhibition “Le Primavere del Bianco/Springs in White”
Concert by Orchestra di Padova and Leonora Armellini
Design exhibition “Italian Genius Now”
Opera concert “Violetta A Traviata”


LANGUAGE COURSES

The Italian Institute of Culture, under the cultural cooperation agreement between Italy and India, offers Italian language courses in several universities and higher education institutes.

Besides, the Institute also offers Italian language courses at its premises for various levels: Primary, Intermediate and Advances, and conversation course.
