• Born in Rome, on December 22, 1952

EDUCATION

• Received his degree in Political Science – International Affairs, from the University of Rome, in 1975, where he graduated “Summa cum Laude”
• In 1977 he was awarded a scholarship by the Society for International Organization in Rome, where he earned a graduate degree with honors, after studying Politics, Economics, International Relations and International Law.
• While in Washington, he attended a course at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace – Smithsonian Study Programm on the “Changing World Order” (1995) and studied Moral Philosophy at Georgetown University (1997)

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

• 1978: Joined the Italian Foreign Service – Department of Political Affairs
• 1980-1981: Member of the Italian Delegation to CSCE, Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, in Madrid
• 1981-1983: First Secretary – Embassy of Italy – Bagdad, Iraq
• 1983-1987: First Secretary – Embassy of Italy – Paris, France
• 1987-1988: Counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Italy – Islamabad, Pakistan
• 1988-1993: Counselor in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rome
• 1993-1998: First Counselor – Embassy of Italy – Washington, U.S.A.
• 1998-2000: First Counselor – Italian Permanent Mission to NATO, Bruxelles
